At the beginning of the new millennium and at a time, when Greece had almost zero infrastructure in the field of Rehabilitation Medicine, an interdisciplinary team in Thessaloniki laid the foundation for the creation of the first and largest Recovery and Rehabilitation Center in Greece, ANAGENNISI. The work carried out was based on the following principles:
The field of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation is responsible for the prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of people with medical conditions that cause simple, or complex functional problems and comorbidity, across all ages.
Rehabilitation is a fundamental right, as it gives every person who suffers the opportunity to regain their independence, autonomy, and well-being.
The rehabilitation process should focus on the person who has been injured and not just the wounds inflicted on one’s health.
Rehabilitation should aim to a new beginning – a new life – whatever the limitations of the current health problem are.

Infrastructure
The largest Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Center in Greece
The ANAGENNISI building was the first of its kind in Greece and opened its doors in March 2005. It has the largest bed capacity in Greece, and it is one of the most modern in Southeastern Europe.
As the center is located in a wonderful site just outside the city of Thessaloniki, the principal architectural idea was to give patients the opportunity to engage with the external environment being able to enjoy the natural light and see the landscape from any point of the building. The interior patio and the multiple transparent surfaces favour this condition in all areas.
The treatment rooms
Inpatient treatment rooms have been developed on all levels, on the ground floor and on both upper levels – single, double and triple. All the rooms, without any exception, include:
European Health Insurance Card (EHIC)
Greek Organization for Health Care Services (EOPYY)
The ANAGENNISI Recovery and Rehabilitation Center of Thessaloniki is affiliated with National Health Insurance System.
If you are in the process of selecting a rehabilitation center, before a surgery, it is good to know that European citizens who hold a valid European Health Insurance Card and a proof of identification (passport or ID) have access to primary and secondary healthcare in the Greek network of healthcare providers. In orthopaedic cases, authorization for treatment in a rehabilitation center by EOPYY requires that a surgery has preceded.
The electronic request to National Health Insurance System for treatment at the ANAGENNISI center must be submitted by the doctors of the hospital, or the clinic you have been treated in, at least 48 hours, before your discharge.
The approved referral for treatment at the center should be submitted promptly, that is to transfer the patient directly from the clinic/hospital to the ANAGENNISI center.
You also, need to be aware that you cannot use your health insurance card in other National Health Insurance System facilities, if it has already been used upon your admittance to ANAGENNISI.

The ANAGENNISI Recovery & Rehabilitation Center is accredited to ISO 9001: 2015, which is the most widespread international standard for a quality management system. ISO 9001 demonstrates ANAGENNISI’s ability to consistently provide products and services that meet customer and regulatory requirements.
ANAGENNISI is also, the first rehabilitation and recovery center in Greece that was certified according to the requirements of the EN 15224: 2012 standard. This European Standard is focused on requirements for clinical processes. It aims to adjust and specify the quality management system standard for health care organizations, and introduces Clinical Risk Assessment and Clinical Risk Management for the first time, as measurable concepts directly related to the effectiveness and efficiency of health services. It also specifies the concept of quality in health care, so that it can be measurable and controllable.
For comprehensive care and quality assurance at all levels, we proceeded with the ISO 22000 certification for the provision of complete catering services to the patients and the staff of our center.
At first glance, the corporate logo is reminiscent of a simple leaf, the universal symbol of life and rebirth. ts symbolism, however, does not end there. Two curves, like two hands coming together to protect something valuable, create a calm and harmonious form that suggests the concept of care. Finally, the ladder enclosed as the nerve of the leaf, illustrates the demanding journey to the rehabilitation and the functional independence of the individual.
